The United States Mint today, December 1, 2011,  released the 2011 Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coins. These Lucretia Garfield Gold Coins are issued in both proof and uncirculated conditions.

Like previous strikes in the  series, the Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coins are each struck from 1/2 ounce of 24 karat gold (.9999 fine). Shown on both the obverse and reverse of each coin is a design honoring Lucretia Garfield, wife of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.

The obverse of the strike contains a portrait of Lucretia, as designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by US Mint sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill. The reverse shows a scene from the life of Lucretia by depicting her painting, emblematic of her life-long love of art. The reverse was designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso.

Release price for the coins is $1,029.00 for the proof coin and $1,016.00 for the uncirculated. These prices are subject to change based on the Mint's precious metal numismatic coin pricing matrix which ties the price of the gold coin series to recent gold market activity.

Each coin is encapsulated in a clear protective coin holder and packaged in a polished lacquered hardwood presentation case with red felt lining. The included numbered certificate of authenticity indicated the maximum mintage of 15,000 coins across all product options.
