Hawaii Volcanoes ATB 5 Oz Silver Coins
The 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coins will be issued by the United States Mint as the fourth of five 2012-dated strikes in two separate series - the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ and the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coins™. These two series feature almost identical designs and specifications but are intended for different markets.
Each 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coin is struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches like other coins of the two series. Shown on the reverse of this coin is a design emblematic of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park located in the state of Hawaii.
This design was actually originally created for yet a third US Mint series - the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Congress dictated that the bullion coins contain the same designs as found on those quarters like the Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter and the five ounce uncirculated coins follow that same plan.
All America the Beautiful related coins contain the same obverse portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan. The image of the first President of the United States was designed for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has been featured on quarters in one form or another ever since.
The reverse of the strikes contains the emblematic design of the featured site of national interest, in this case Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The US Mint describes the reverse design for the Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter (and thus these strikes) this way:
A total of fifty-six different coins will be issued in each America the Beautiful series. The strikes appear at a rate of five per year from their debut in 2010 until the last strikes are issued in 2021.
The 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Bullion Coin is issued by the US Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Program authorized by Congress under Public Law 110-456. Under the law, Congress directed the Mint to strike five ounces silver coins with designs taken from the circulating quarter dollars and sell them for a small premium above the current spot price of the silver contained within them.
The US Mint uses a network of authorized purchasers to sell the bullion coins. The network obtains the coins in bulk, then resells them for the cost of the silver plus the aforementioned premium.
The 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Uncirculated Coins are issued by the US Mint for collectors under the authority granted the Secretary of the Treasury in 31 U.S.C. §5111(a) (3). As numismatic Mint products, the coins are sold directly to the public but carry a much higher premium.
Those looking to differentiate between the bullion and the uncirculated strikes should look for a mintmark. The uncirculated coin carries a 'P' mintmark indicating it was struck at the US Mint's facility in Philadelphia.
Five 2012 America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coins will be released by the US Mint in each series. Along with the Hawaii Volcanoes America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coins, the US Mint will also strike the following four coins in 2012:
Also produced by the US Mint will be silver America the Beautiful Quarters. These quarters are struck from 90% silver instead of the standard clad composition of circulating quarter dollars. The silver quarters are released as part of two annual sets - the 2012 Silver Proof Set and the 2012 Quarters Silver Proof Set.
