Denali ATB 5 Oz Silver Coins
The 2012 Denali America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coins are each struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver with a diameter of three inches. Showcased on their reverse will be a design emblematic of Denali National Park located in the state of Alaska.
Each 2012 Denali America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coin is struck as part of one of two series of coins from the United States Mint, either the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program and the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coins™ Program. Both series feature nearly identical designs and specifications but have different intended markets.
Shown on the obverse of the coin is the same portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan seen on all America the Beautiful related coins including an associated series of quarters dollars known as the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. In fact, the quarter series actually serves as the basis for both the bullion coins and the five ounce uncirculated coins meaning the Denali Five Ounce Coins will contain the same designs as found on the Denali Quarter.
The reverse of all of the Denali America the Beautiful Coins showcases the design emblematic of Denali National Park of Alaska. The US Mint describes the reverse design for the quarter this way:
A total of fifty-six coins will be struck by the Mint in each America the Beautiful series with one site represented from each state, the District of Columbia and the five US territories.
The 2012 Denali Silver Bullion Coin is released as part of the Mint's America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Program. These coins were authorized by Congress and directed to be sold by the Mint at as near market prices as possible. Thus, the bullion coins are sold through the Mint's network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above the current spot price of the five ounces of silver contained in each.
The 2012 Denali Silver Uncirculated Coin is struck by the Mint as part of its America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coins Program. This coin series was created under the authority granted the Secretary of the Treasury in 31 U.S.C. §5111(a) (3). Unlike the bullion coins, the uncirculated coins are sold directly to the public by the US Mint, but carry a much larger premium.
In addition to the 2012 Denali America the Beautiful 5 Oz Silver Coin, the US Mint will strike four others in 2012 including :
Also produced by the US Mint will be silver America the Beautiful Quarters. These quarters are struck from 90% silver instead of the standard clad composition of circulating quarter dollars. The silver quarters are released as part of two annual sets - the 2012 Silver Proof Set and the 2012 Quarters Silver Proof Set.
