Chester Arthur Presidential $1 Coin
The 2012 Chester A. Arthur Presidential $1 Coin will be the first of four 2012-dated strikes of the US Mint's Presidential $1 Coin Program. The obverse of each coin contains a portrait of the twenty-first President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur.
These Chester A. Arthur Presidential $1 Coins also mark the twenty-first to be released in the series which debuted in 2007 and honors the former Presidents of the United States in the order in which they served. The three coins set to follow the Arthur Presidential Coin in 2012 include the Grover Cleveland (First Term) Presidential $1 Coin, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential $1 Coin and the Grover Cleveland (Second Term) Presidential $1 Coin.
Chester Arthur assumed the office of President of the United States on September 19, 1881 after the assassination of the previous President, James Garfield. Arthur only served the rest of Garfield's term and he left the Presidency on March 4, 1885. He did officially seek the nomination for re-election, but with the onset of a fatal kidney disease knew he would not be capable of fulfilling those duties.
2012 marks a change for the Presidential $1 Coin series - since their introduction the coins were struck and distributed for general circulation. However, owing to stockpiles of the strikes in Federal Reserve vaults, the federal government opted in late 2011 to discontinue the series for general circulation and instead will only mint the strikes for collectors.
