2012 Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set

A limited edition commemorative coin product was released by the United States Mint today, June 1, 2012. Beginning at Noon (Eastern), the US Mint began offering the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set for $53.95, plus the Mint's standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order with a maximum mintage for the set established at just 50,000.

Included as part of the set is one Proof Silver Dollar Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin. Also found in the set is information and colorful artwork related to the Battle of Baltimore fought during the War of 1812 and a reproduction of one of Francis Scott Key's original manuscripts of his poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" which he wrote after witnessing the battle.

The poem would eventually become the national anthem of the United States. Full lyrics to the anthem are also includes as part of the set.

The Star-Spangled Banner Proof Silver Dollar was authorized by Congress along with an uncirculated version of the coin as well as gold proof and uncirculated coins under the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 111-232). Under the Act, up to 500,000 of the silver dollars and 100,00 of the gold coins may be issued.

Release of the individual coins occurred on March 5, 2012 with all four versions still available. Of interest, the individual proof silver dollar is being sold for $54.95 - one dollar more than this Bicentennial Set which contains the same strike.

The US Mint describes the designs of the silver dollar with:

"The obverse design of the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver $1 Coin is emblematic of the theme "The Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry."  The design depicts Lady Liberty waving the 15-star, 15-stripe Star-Spangled Banner flag, with Fort McHenry in the background.  Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2012.  The obverse was designed by AIP Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill."

"The reverse design is emblematic of the theme "The Star-Spangled Banner" (the flag).   It depicts a waving modern American flag.  Inscriptions are ONE DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  The reverse was designed by AIP Associate Designer William C. Burgard III and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart."
