2011 Vicksburg 5 oz Silver Coins
|
The US Mint strikes the 2011 Vicksburg 5 oz Silver Coins to honor Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi with each coin created from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches. Each of these coins has a design similar to that of the Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter created as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The major differences, of course, between these strikes and the quarters are their size and composition. Still, the larger five ounces silver coins contain almost identical imagery to that found on the Vicksburg Quarter with a portrait of George Washington on the obverse and a reverse image of the Civil War era gunboat USS Cairo as it would have appeared steaming on the Yazoo River. Each 2011 Vicksburg Silver Bullion Coin is struck to bullion quality for investors as part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ series. This series is sold through the Mint's network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above the current spot price of the precious metal contained within them. In comparison, the 2011 Vicksburg Five Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coin is struck for collectors and features an uncirculated finish which typically has a higher level of detail than will be found on the bullion coins. Also, these uncirculated coins are sold directly by the US Mint to the public with a much higher premium than seen on the bullion coins. A total of five America the Beautiful related coins are struck per year per series including this Vicksburg 5 oz Silver Coin. The remaining four for 2011 are:
The Mint also strikes 90% silver quarter dollars containing these images which are included as part of the 2011 US Mint Silver Proof Set and the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. Typically, the quarters of the America the Beautiful Program are struck from clad for circulation. Coins Specifications & Information
