|
The nineteenth coin to appear from the US Mint in a series dedicated to the former Presidents of the United States of America is the 2011 Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin. The strike shows a release date of August 18, 2011. Coins in the series each honor a different former President and are released in the order upon which the individuals served in office. The program debuted in 2007 and sees four strikes released annually as part of it until all the eligible individuals have been honored with a coin. Two strikes are scheduled to appear in 2011 before the release of this Hayes Coin including the Andrew Johnson Presidential $1 Coin and the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential $1 Coin. The one coin to appear following this release is the James Garfield Presidential $1 Coin. Rutherford B. Hayes also rose to national attention as a soldier during the American Civil War, but he ended his commission to become a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1865. He followed that with three terms as the Governor of Ohio before becoming the nineteenth President of the United States serving for one term from 1877-1881 and keeping his promise to not run for another.
