2011 Olympic Quarter

The 2011 Olympic National Park Quarter is the eighth strike in the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program® and honors the national park found in the state of Washington. The Olympic Quarter also marks the third quarter dollar to be issued in 2011 by the US Mint and shows a release date of June 13, 2011. Two strikes will be appear in 2011 before the release of the Olympic Quarter including the Gettysburg Quarter and the Glacier Quarter with the Vicksburg Quarter and the Chickasaw Quarter following it later in the year. All five of the strikes are part of the second year for the series which debuted in 2010 and will run until 2021 at which time a total of fifty-six new quarters will have been released as part of the program. Olympic National Park is found on the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington. The area was first given federal protection by President Theodore Roosevelt as Mount Olympus National Monument in 1909. It attained the national park status on June 29, 1938. The park receives well over two million annual visitors owing in large part to the diverse landscapes which it has to offer. Found within the parks boundaries are a 73 mile Pacific Ocean coastline, the Olympic Mountains and a temperate rainforest. Combined, the three unique regions offer visitors many recreational opportunities in its 922,000 acres. Olympic National Park Quarter DesignObverse design: The inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark are included on the obverse surrounding the portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This portrait by John Flanagan is seen on all of the America the Beautiful coins and was first used on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar. Reverse design: The reverse of the Olympic National Park Quarter shows a Roosevelt Elk standing on a gravel bar of the Hoh River with Mount Olympus depicted off in the distance. It was designed by AIP Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso and also includes the inscriptions of "OLYMPIC," "WASHINGTON," "2011" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
