2011 Olympic 5 oz Silver Coins
|
The 2011 Olympic 5 oz Silver Coins are each struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches and honor Olympic National Park found in the state of Washington. The designs found on each of these coins is based on the designs found on the Olympic National Park Quarter created as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. However, whereas the America the Beautiful quarter dollars are struck mainly for circulation, these five ounce silver strikes were created for a much different purpose. Still, they feature designs similar to those found on the Olympic Quarter including an obverse portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and a reverse design emblematic of the park with a Roosevelt Elk shown on a gravel bar of the Hoh River with Mount Olympus in the distance. The US Mint strikes the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™, including the 2011 Olympic Silver Bullion Coin, for investors as a means for them to add small amounts of the precious metal to their portfolios. As a bullion product of the Mint, the coins are all sold through the Mint's network of authorized purchasers who resell them for a small premium above the current spot price of the precious metals contained within them. This is different from the 2011 Olympic Five Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coin which the Mint strikes for collectors. These uncirculated coins still feature the same basic design as all of the other America the Beautiful related coins, but are struck with an uncirculated finish which typically has more detail than will be found on the bullion strikes. Also, the Mint sells these uncirculated coins directly to the public. The Olympic 5 oz Silver Coins are one of a total of five different 2011-dated coins in their respective series. The other four include:
