2011 Native American $1 Coin
The 2011 Native American $1 Coin marks the third year for this series of coins which features annually changing reverse designs. The series is actually a continuation of the Sacagawea Dollars that first appeared from the US Mint in 2000.
However, under the terms of the Native American $1 Coin Act (Public Law 110-82), the original obverse design of Sacagawea was to remain on the coins, but the reverse was to feature new designs annually showcasing the important contributions Native Americans have made to the development of the United States. These new designs first appeared with the 2009 Native American $1 Coin.
That 2009 strike featured a "Three Sisters Agriculture" design which was followed in 2010 with the "Great Tree of Peace" design. Finally, this 2011 strike contains the "Diplomacy—Treaties with Tribal Nations" design which recalls the first formal written alliance between European settlers and Native Americans.
Proof and uncirculated versions of the Native American coin are also available.
Native American $1 Coin Design
Obverse design: The obverse of the Native American $1 Coin remains the same as seen on the Sacagawea Dollars since 2000. It features an image of the famous Shoshone woman Sacagawea who served as a guide to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Sacagawea is shown carrying her infant son on her back. It was designed by Glenne Goodacre. Also seen are the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Reverse design: "Diplomacy - Treaties with Tribal Nations" is the theme for the reverse of the 2011 Native American $1 Coin. It shows the hands of Supreme Sachem Ousamequin Massasoit and Governor John Carver exchanging the peace pipe after completing the first formal written alliance between European settlers and Native Americans in 1621. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Richard Masters and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna and includes the inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," " $1" and " WAMPANOAG TREATY 1621."
