2011 Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The Lucretia Garfield First Spouse Gold Coins are the final of four strikes in the US Mint's First Spouse Gold Coin Program to appear in 2011. Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition. This series honors the spouses of the former Presidents of the United States and are released in the order upon which that President served. The three strikes in the series scheduled to appear earlier in 2011 than the Lucretia Garfield Coins include the Eliza Johnson Gold Coins, the Julia Grant Gold Coins and the Lucy Hayes Gold Coins. Bronze medal replicas of these coins will also be created by the US Mint. Lucretia married James A. Garfield on November 11, 1858 and many years later he would be elected to the Presidency assuming office on March 4, 1881. Despite initial ambitions for the White House, Lucretia contracted malaria and was unable to pursue any of them before her husband was assassinated. Lucretia Garfield Gold Coin DesignObverse design: AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox designed the obverse portrait of Lucretia which is surrounded by the inscriptions of "LUCY HAYES," "19th," "1877-1881" and "2011." The obverse was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Reverse design: The inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "$10," "1/2 oz." and ".9999 FINE GOLD" are included on the reverse designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. Also shown is an image of Lucretia painting, indicative of her lifelong appreciation of art. Gold Coin Specifications & Information
