2011 Julia Grant First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The Julia Grant First Spouse Gold Coins are listed as the second strike to appear in 2011 as part of the US Mint's First Spouse Gold Coin Program. The coins will be struck to both proof and uncirculated quality from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold. Coins in the series honor the spouses of the former Presidents of the United States, with this specific strike honoring Julia Grant, wife of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President. This coin marks the nineteenth to appear in the series but will only be preceded by one in 2011, the Eliza Johnson Gold Coins. Following the Grant Coin that same year will be the Lucy Hayes Gold Coins and the Lucretia Garfield Gold Coins. The US Mint will also be producing bronze medal replicas of the Julia Grant First Spouse Gold Coins for sale to the public. Julia married Ulysses on August 22, 1848 despite the disapproval of both of their parents. Her parents did not like the idea of her marrying a career military man and his did not like the fact that her family were slave holders. Despite those misgivings, the marriage was, by most accounts, successful with the eight years they spent in the White House seen as their happiest.
