The 2011 Andrew Johnson Presidential $1 Coin honors the seventeenth President of the United States and also marks the seventeenth release in the US Mint's Presidential $1 Coin program. This coin shows a release date of February 22, 2011. Coins in this series honor the former Presidents of the United States with portraits of them featured on the obverse of $1 coins. Four new strikes will be issued annually in the series until all of the eligible individuals have been honored on their own coin. Coins set to follow this one in 2011 include the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential $1 Coin, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin and the James Garfield Presidential $1 Coin. Andrew Johnson assumed the office of President upon the assassination of the Abraham Lincoln. He had been Lincoln's Vice President for slightly over a month before the death of Lincoln thrust him to the nation's highest office. His tenure proved to be relatively un-productive and he failed to regain the nomination for President and only served one term. Johnson Presidential $1 Coin DesignObverse design: United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart designed the portrait of Johnson featured on the obverse of this coin. It is surrounded by the inscriptions of "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ANDREW JOHNSON," "17TH PRESIDENT" and "1865-1869." Reverse design: Don Everhart also designed the image of the Statue of Liberty that is featured on the reverse of all Presidential coins along with the inscriptions "$1" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
