2011 American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin
|
The 2011 American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins were first seen in 1986 from the US Mint and they have appeared annually ever since. Congress authorized the strikes as a means for investors to obtain small amounts of silver and add it to their portfolios for near-market prices. To enhance the desirability of the strikes, an image was chosen for the obverse of the coins that many consider to be one of the most beautiful ever struck on an American Coin. It was originally used on the 1916 Half Dollar Coin and was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. Many call this design "Walking Liberty." American Silver Eagles have proven to be popular with the public over the years with millions of the strikes sold annually. Their popularity exploded in the few years leading up to 2011 as investors sought some diversification in their portfolios during uncertain economic times. For example, in 2008 only 19,583,500 of the coins were sold, In 2009 this jumped to 28,766,500 and by 2010, investors snatched up 34,662,500.
