The Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold coins are the fifteenth in the series which started in 2007. Each coin is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition. A bronze medal replica of the design is also created by the Mint. Opposed to her husband's political ambitions for years, Jane actually fainted upon hearing the news of his nomination for President. Her grief was further enhanced when, two months before his inauguration as President, their only surviving child was killed in a freak train accident. Jane never fully recovered from his death. A maximum of 40,000 Jane Pierce coins will be struck across all product options. Jane Pierce Gold Coin DesignObverse design: Jane Pierce's portrait on the obverse was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Don Everhart. Around the portrait are the inscriptions "JANE PIERCE ," "14TH 1853-1857," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," "2010" and the mintmark "W." Reverse design: The reverse showcases Jane sitting in the visitor's gallery of the Old Senate Chamber of the US Capitol listening to a debate.
