2010 James Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The James Buchanan's Liberty First Spouse Gold coin takes a slight departure from normal first spouse coin designs by showcasing the mythical figure Liberty instead of an actual person. This is because Buchanan was a life-long bachelor so the law dictates a design of Liberty be used instead. In this case, Liberty was taken from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle designed by Christian Gobrecht which was issued from 1840-1907. The Buchanan coin marks the fourth time Liberty was used on a first spouse coin. A maximum of 40,000 of the Buchanan Libertys will be issued across all product options. Each coin is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition. A bronze medal replica of the design will also be created by the Mint. Buchanan's Liberty Gold Coin DesignObverse design: The obverse shows an image of Liberty first seen on the 1840-1907 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle designed by Christian Gobrecht. Around the portrait are the inscriptions "15TH PRESIDENCY ," 1857-1861," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2010" and the mintmark "W." Reverse design: A young James Buchanan is see on the reverse working on the books in his family's small store.
