When the Fillmore's moved to Washington D.C. after Millard was elected Vice-President, they had no way of knowing that in just 16 months they would be moving to the White House when President Zachary Taylor passed away. Uncomfortable with most social duties required of the First Lady, Abigail left the responsibility to her daughter. Instead, she spent her time reading and organizing the White House Library which she founded.
