2009 US Mint Silver Proof Set
|
The US Mint Silver Proof Set was released on July 17, 2009, for the price of $52.95. The 2009 set is $8 more than the 2008 annual counterpart, but it also includes an additional silver quarter and four bicentennial 2009 Lincoln cents. Similar to the clad proof set released by the Mint in June that sold like hot cakes during the first several weeks, the silver set contains collector versions of the all 18 coins struck for general circulation. These coins bear the "S" mint mark denoting they were minted at the United States Mint in San Francisco and are in collector proof condition -- a process that creates a sharp relief and a mirror-like background on coins, with their frosted, sculpted foregrounds featuring a special cameo effect. Unlike the circulating varieties found in daily change, the dime, half-dollar, and six quarters are struck in lustrous 90 percent silver. Additionally, and again unlike circulating coins, the four 2009 Lincoln Cents contain the same metallic composition as the original 1909 penny -- 95% copper, 3% zinc and 2% tin. The 2009 US Mint Proof Set includes the following 18 coins:
The annual Mint product is always tremendously popular with collectors and gift-givers. The 2008 silver proof set has a sales tally of 570,817. Set Specifications & Information
