The 2009 coins celebrating and commemorating the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth were released to an enormous amount of collector excitement.

The 2009 US Mint Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set was the most popular, as the 50,000 authorized at $55.95 each were sold out in less than 30 hours.

Ordering was so fierce during the first several hours that US Mint phone lines were severely backed up and its web site went down.

The Chronicles Set includes:

  • A reproduced Abraham Lincoln photograph
  • A reproduction of the Gettysburg Address in Lincoln’s handwriting
  • A certificate of Authenticity
  • Encasement in a slip-covered leather-like tri-fold case

Initially released on February 12, 2009, the Lincoln silver proof coins would last only about 6 weeks before the US Mint declared them sold out. In that short period of time, the allotted mintage of 325,000 were gone. 50,000 were held back for the Lincoln Chronicles Set. The desirability of owning another one of the silver commemoratives certainly helped drive sales for the set.

The four pennies in this special set are struck from the same 95% copper alloy that the original 1909 Lincoln Cents were composed of, instead of the copper-plated zinc (97.5 zinc & 2.5% copper) used in normal circulating pennies today.
