2009 UHR Gold Coin
|
The $20 Double Eagle Liberty coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever made. The coin was first produced in 1907, but few were made. Back then, the coining process was too arduous to make an ultra high relief coin bearing his legendary design. Only variations of the design have been used. Finally, in 2008 the U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy announced the Mint has found a way to mass produce the famous double eagle liberty design in its intended ultra high relief state. Current technology allowed the Mint to digitally reproduce the original Saint-Gaudens piece, and added only a few design changes for the 2009 version of the $20 Gold Coin. UHR Coin DesignAugustus Saint-Gaudens (1848–1907) designed the front and back. Obverse design: The obverse features a full length Lady Liberty in a flowing robe striding forward holding the Torch of Freedom in her front hand and an olive branch in the other. The year 2009 is written in Roman numerals (MMIX). A tiny U.S. Capitol dome is also depicted in the background. Additional stars were added to represent the current 50 states. A small border was added for a more consistent edge. Reverse design: The reverse image is a young bald eagle flying over a sunrise. The inscription, "IN GOD WE TRUST", was added above the sun and below the sun's rays. Edge design: Featured on the edge of the coin is raised edge-lettering for the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the letters separated by stars. Coin Specifications & Information
