2009 Puerto Rico Quarter
|
A ceremony in April launched the second coin in a series of six honoring the District of Columbia and the U.S. Territories. The 2009 Puerto Rico Quarter features an ocean-view on its reverse. Along with the ocean, a hibiscus and a sentry box are also seen in the design. Puerto Rico played an important military role throughout its history, and the sentry box is a reminder of that past. The Puerto Rico quarter was struck mainly for circulation, but uncirculated and proof versions exist as well. Puerto Rico Quarter DesignObverse design: An image of George Washington has appeared on the quarter dollar since 1932. Originally designed by John Flanagan, William Cousins made some modifications to include additional inscriptions.. The inscriptions found on the obverse are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark. Reverse design: Designed and sculpted by Joseph Menna, the reverse shows a view of the ocean and a sentry box in old San Juan along with a hibiscus. Also seen are the inscriptions "PUERTO RICO" , "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "2009" and "ISLA DEL INCANTO." Coin Specifications & Information
