2009 Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins are due to be released from the US Mint on December 3, 2009. The First Spouse series celebrates the contributions made by the wives of the former Presidents of the United States. Each coin is created from 1/2 ounce of .9999 pure gold, with proof and uncirculated versions struck. A bronze medal with the same images is also made by the Mint. Zachary Taylor was elected the twelfth President of the United States despite Margaret's prayers for his defeat. She felt her husband had served the country enough in war and that they could be quite happy in retirement. Considered a semi-invalid, Margaret still ran the personal household once in Washington, but left the ceremonial duties to one of her daughters. When President Taylor died only 16 months into office, Margaret's health continued to decline and she also passed away two years later. Margaret Taylor Gold Coin DesignObverse design: Phebe Hemphill designed the portrait featured on the obverse of the coin and it was sculpted by Charles Vickers. The inscriptions "MARGARET TAYLOR," "12th 1849-1850," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," "2009" and the mintmark "W" are all found on the obverse as well. Reverse design: The reverse shows Margaret attending to a wounded soldier, a duty she is said to have performed often while accompanying her husband from post to post. It was designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Also found on the reverse are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", "1/2 OZ.", and ".9999 PURE GOLD."
