The four redesigned 2009 cents celebrate the bicentennial birth of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, and the 100 anniversary of very first 1909 Lincoln penny.

The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent Proof Set is one of the US Mint products that include the four pennies, with each reverse design reflecting a different aspect of Lincoln's life.

Unlike the circulating varieties, the proof in the set are struck in cameo proof condition.

"Proof coins are manufactured at the United States Mint at San Francisco using specially prepared, highly polished dies and are extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background," the US Mint explains. "A frosted, sculpted foreground gives them a cameo effect."

The four 2009-S Lincoln Proof Cents, with their special copper composition include:

• Lincoln Birthplace Cent - The 'Log Cabin' reverse was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.
• Lincoln Formative Years Cent - The 'Rail Splitter' reverse was designed and sculpted by Charles Vickers.
• Lincoln Professional Life Cent - Designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart, the reverse features Abraham Lincoln in a professional pose in front of the Old State Capital in Springfield, Illinois.
• Lincoln Presidency Cent - The final 2009 Lincoln Cent, designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph Menna, features a half-completed US Capitol dome, as it appeared during Lincoln's Presidency.

The obverse or heads side of coins feature the familiar Victor D. Brenner designed likeness of President Lincoln that was first introduced in 1909.

The 2009 proof Lincoln cents are minted from the same 95% copper alloy that the original 1909 Lincoln Cents were composed of, instead of the copper-plated zinc used in normal circulating pennies.
