2009 Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The Letitia Tyler Gold coins are available in both proof and uncirculated conditions from the US Mint. A bronze medal replica of the design has also been created for purchase. Letitia's coins are the second set of First Spouse coins to be released in 2009, but the tenth for the series as a whole. Also, as her husband John Tyler was married twice while still in office, there are two First Spouse coins linked to his presidency. Letitia was the first wife of President Tyler, and moved with him into the White House after his election. She had suffered a stroke a few years earlier but still managed to run all but the ceremonial duties that were usually expected of a First Lady. A second stroke took Letitia's life in 1842 making her the first wife of a President to die while he was still in office. Letitia Tyler Gold Coin DesignObverse design: Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the obverse of the coin which includes a portrait of Letitia Tyler. Over her head is her name "LETITIA TYLER" while underneath is "10th 1841-1842." Inscriptions also included on the obverse are "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," "2009" and the mintmark "W." Reverse design: The reverse shows Letitia playing with her two oldest children behind their Cedar Grove Plantation. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", "1/2 OZ.", and ".9999 PURE GOLD." Coin Specifications & Information
