2009 Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin
|
The Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold coins are the eleventh in a series that started in 2007 to honor those who served alongside their Presidential husbands. The First Spouse line also marks the first time the Mint has done a series that only features women. Each gold coin is struck from one half ounce of 24-karat gold with bronze replicas of the coin design also available. Julia Tyler was the second wife of President John Tyler (whose first marriage ended when Letitia died while he was in office). Married late in his term, Julia was only the First Lady for a short 8 months, but made some significant changes while there. She is credited with instituting the policy of playing James Sanderson’s song "Hail to the Chief" whenever the President arrived at an official function, a tradition continued to this day. Julia Tyler Gold Coin DesignObverse design: The obverse of the Julia Tyler coin was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart. It features a portrait of Julia with her name inscribed over her head. Below is "10th 1844-1845." Also seen are "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," "2009" and the mintmark "W." Reverse design: The reverse was also designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart to feature Julia and John dancing at a White House Ball. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "$10", "1/2 OZ.", and ".9999 PURE GOLD" are also found on the reverse. Coin Specifications & Information
