2009 James K. Polk Presidential $1 Coin
|
The James K. Polk Presidential $1 Coin is the third coin issued in 2009 as part of the series, but the 11th overall. It honors a man who vowed to only serve one term, and kept his word. Polk was also instrumental in the growth of the United States through his belief in Manifest Destiny. With his actions, he added 810,000 square miles of land to the country, making his acquisitions second only to Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase. The Polk coins were launched at a Mint ceremony held at Polk's home in Columbia, Tennessee. Polk Presidential $1 Coin DesignObverse design: Susan Gamble designed the portrait of James K. Polk that is featured on the obverse of his coins. It was sculpted by Charles Vickers and includes the inscriptions "JAMES K. POLK," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "11TH PRESIDENT" and "1845-1849." Reverse design: An image of the Statue of Liberty (designed and sculpted by Don Everhart) is featured on the reverse of all Presidential coins along with the inscriptions "$1" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
