2009 Guam Quarter
|
The third coin in the US Mint's D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarter series is the 2009 Guam Quarter. Launched in May, the coin saw very little demand (probably due mostly to the economy) and only 87,600,000 were ever struck for circulation. While this may seem like a lot, it is not even 25% of the Oklahoma State Quarter, which had the distinction of featuring the lowest mintage for that series. Along with the low number of circulation strikes, the Mint also produced the coins in proof quality. Guam Quarter DesignObverse design: George Washington appears on the obverse of the quarter dollar as he has done since 1932. It was originally designed by John Flanagan, but has been modified slightly by sculptor William Cousins. The inscriptions found on the obverse are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark. Reverse design: An outline of the island of Guam is seen on the reverse, along with a boat known as a flying proa and a latte stone. It was designed by David Westwood and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Also seen are the inscriptions "GUAM" , "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "2009" and "GUAHAN I TANO MANCHAMMORROISLA DEL INCANTO." Coin Specifications & Information
