The DC & US Territories Quarters Proof Set has the distinction of being the first numismatic product offered by the United States Mint in 2009. Launched on Jan. 5 for $19.95, the set includes six quarter-dollars struck in proof condition.

"United States Mint proof coins are extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background," the US Mint describes on the 2009 quarter proof set product page. "Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect.  Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes."

The Mint goes on to add that the "blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp relief.  The coins are then packaged in a protective lens to showcase and maintain their exceptional finish."

The following clad quarter-dollars are included in the set:

• Puerto Rico Quarter
• Guam Quarter
• American Samoa Quarter
• U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter
• Northern Mariana Islands Quarter

These quarters followed on the heals of the highly successful 50 States Quarters® Program. But while that series lasted 10 years, the 2009 quarter series is one year only --replaced by America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which honors American national parks and national sites.
