2009 American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin
|
First issued in 1986, the American Eagle Silver Bullion coins have appeared annually ever since. The bullion coins have sold at record levels for the year 2009. As of the beginning of December, over 25 million have been issued to the Mint's authorized purchasers. This easily surpasses the previous record created in 2008 of nearly 21 million. The enormous demand has not been without consequences, both for purchasers and for the Mint. As recently as late November, the Mint had to temporarily suspend sales of the coins because it could not keep up with demand. Shipments were expected to resume in December, but under an allocation program. American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin DesignObverse design: The obverse is based on Adolph A. Weinman's 1916 "Walking Liberty" half dollar. It shows Lady Liberty walking while holding an olive branch. Also shown are the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year. Reverse design: The reverse was completed by US Mint Engraver John Mercanti and shows a Heraldic Eagle with shield. In the eagles beak is a scroll containing the words "E PLURIBUS UNIM." Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR." Coin Specifications & Information
