2009 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin
|
Featuring a reverse design that changes annually, the 2009 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins are scheduled for release on December 3, 2009. They have been a staple of the US Mints precious metals offerings since 1997. Platinum Eagles were also available in fractional sizes until this year. The Mint announced in 2008 that the fractional sizes were eliminated from future offerings. Like its gold and silver Eagle counterparts, no 2009 Platinums were issued in the first nine months of the year. Citing blank availability, the Mint had only recently confirmed the return of some of their precious metal coins. One coin that apparently will not be seen this year is the Platinum Bullion Eagle, making the one ounce proof version the only one available. American Eagle Platinum Coin DesignObverse design: Designed by John Mercanti, the obverse of the Platinum Eagle features an image of the Statue of Liberty looking "towards the future." Also seen are the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year of minting. Reverse design: The reverse design starts off a six year series showcasing the six principles of democracy found in the Preamble of the United States Constitution. This years design uses four faces to personify the diversity of America with their hair and clothing intertwined to examplify "A More Perfect Union." It also feature the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "$100," "1 OZ." and ".9995 PLATINUM." The reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
