2009 American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin
|
Gold American Eagle Bullion coins were first available in 1986. The law authorizing them (Bullion Coin Act of 1985) requires the gold contained within them to be mined from sources in the United States. Each coin contains the stated amount of gold as well as a small amount of silver and copper to bring them to a 22-karat gold standard which is resistant to scratching and marring. The one ounce version of the gold bullion eagles were released in December 2008. The fractional sizes did not appear until December 3, 2009, and high demand caused the US Mint to declare no inventory left available for the 1/10 ounce coin in one day. The 1/2 ounce and 1/4 ounce coins were also showing extremely limited availability. The Mint stated it plans to continue to strike the fractional sizes on in-house blank inventory, and release them using an allocation program in mid-December.
